Butts out, for real!
G-Rod signed the statewide smoking ban today, making it a law that on Jan. 1, 2008, it's lights out at all bars, restaurants and most other public places. While Chicago's partial smoking ban kicked in during January 2006, this will put to rest all those questions of whether or not a spot is a full-fledged restaurant, or just a bar and grill, where is smoking allowed.
Personally as a non-smoker, I think this should have come much sooner, but I'm still happy. What are your thoughts on the ban?

Personally, as a thirty year old, I think the drinking age should be raised to 25 and the driving age to 21. Both changes would clearly "save lives" (less drunk drivers, less dumb*** teenage drivers)and "improve the quality of life" for the remaining majority of people (thru less traffic, and less obnoxious drunks). 25 and unders are in the minority, so why should their opinion matter, right? Majority always rules, screw the minority viewpoint.
So now a substantial majority doesnt smoke, and they are gonna stick it to the minority who does, because politicans answer to the majority. Thats what this ban is about, nothing more and nothing less (like the voters and politicians really give a crap about the health of bartenders...if they really did care about bar/resturant workers, there would be better health insurance programs, labor laws, and a higher minimum wage). Everything else is rationalization so the majority feels warm and fuzzy about their views. In political science, they call this the "tryanny of the majority". Its gonna come back to bite those who so enthusastically support this ban as if its the worlds biggest no brainer. Its all good until the government takes away a freedom that you value, because the majority has decided they dont care for it. Peoples attitude about things they dont like these days is "there should be a law". But they never think about the flip side --- what if thats someone else saying that about what you like? The alternative is an inherent appreciation for personal freedom and minority rights...but that requires something called "compromise", a concept not much in vogue among those who drink deeply from the fountain of self-righteousness.
btw, Al Queda in Iraq is enforcing a smoking ban in the areas they control. If they catch someone smoking, they cut off the fingers they hold the cigarette with (or just shoot them). Seems like they are on right page on this issue, no? Maybe we should reconsider the war on terror.
