Tip for tat!
Today's RedEye had a great story by Alexia Elejalde-Ruiz about the hardships of servers in Chicago: Bad tippers. Demanding customers. Lack of respect. No wonder New York waiters have been striking lately! (see New York Times; registration required)
We were struck -- OK, appalled -- by the woman Elejalde-Ruiz quoted who left a 5-percent tip after receiving subpar service at a Hyde Park eatery. "They are there to serve you, to cater to your needs and make you feel that you are wanted in that restaurant," she says. Yikes! And on Mother's Day, no less.
So OK, time to 'fess up: What's the worst tip you ever left -- and why? (And, yeah, being broke counts as a reason.) And as far as you servers: What's the worst tip you ever received -- and do you think it was deserved?
And, by the way, what counts as good service in your book? Which spots around town have the best?

My date and I ordered approx $12 a piece worth of food, but told our waitress we would be ordering dessert. The waitress came by 4 or 5 more times within 15 minutes to "remind us" before we got our entrees.
When the bill came for $42, I left her $50. She came by and told me that it wasn't 20%, and that I needed to add more money. I told her it was over 15% and that she wasn't friendly and ruined my date. She then stood there and screamed to give her 20%.
Because of the tantrum she threw, I took the tip off the table and walked out the door. This unproffesional waitress ruined my date, all so that she could get $1 or $2 more dollars, when she didn't deserve it!
When I got home, I went on metromix to write a review of the restaurant and saw many other people had already posted complaining about the similar problem at this place.
The tip I leave that way is one penny.
So their management knows, I was NOT pleased with the service or should I say lack of service.
The worst place I ever went to was in Bloomington, Illinois, a buffet which charges one price for the buffet and a waitress is suppose to come by with your drink which costs extra.
No waiter, no waitress came by even to offer me a gl*** of water.
When I left they wanted to bill me for the drink I never had.
I refused to pay and gave them exact change for the cost of the buffet without a tip and without the price of their drink which I never got.
This place wrote down my license plate number and called the police and they sent a bill for the full amount of the meal, which I had already paid for, plus the drink I had never received.
Since I was in college that bill arrived at my parent's home in Chicago.
Why they paid that bill I can't explain.
I went back there with that bill and a policeman demanding a refund and asking that they be charged with mail fraud, a federal crime.
They refunded my money and I never ate there again.
I was a student then at Illinois State and now I'm a Pastor.
I've left $20.00 tips for great service, when the total bill was only $15.00.
But when service is horrible no tip is required!
