Don't candy coat it

X00090_9Well, hooray. Frango mints are coming back to Chicago.

But, c'mon, do you care? I don't. Is the candy -- so closely tied to the Marshall Field's legacy and Chicago history, but manufactured in Pennsylvania since 1999 -- really that big of a deal anymore? Sure, the extra jobs the announcement portends are great. But Frango without Marshall Field's? Sort of like a bad sitcom spinoff. (Any "Joey" fans in the house?)

Well, do you think Frango is still relevant in a town that's now home to amazing boutique chocolatiers like Vosges and Coco Rouge, both of which have refined chocolate making into an art form? Frankly, if I wanted to show off what this town had to offer, I think I'd rather treat my out-of-towners to a box of ginger-wasabi Vosges truffles than bore them with yet another box of Frangos.

Thank God I'm not the only one who doesn't care.

Frangos are by far the best little chocolate mint that was ever made. They are so creamy and delicious and are the perfect after dinner treat. I'm not sure I care where they are produced as long as the recipe is the same. If there was a smart restaurant out there, they would give them out before the check came. Forget those little fruit gels and mini cookies. I want Frangos!

Thanks for the Vosges love! I work at the Michigan Avenue store and multiple people have come in asking why Marshall Fields/Macy's isn't selling our products anymore (I suspect that was their decision and not ours)...We appreciate the compliment!

Can you really compare the Frango to Vosges? Really now, Vosges is in a league of their own.

Comparing Frango and Vosges? Its like comparing McDonalds to NoMi. Frango has always been the over-hyped chocolate mint. Glad to know I am not the only one who does not care.

Is it just me or has anyone noticed the decline in Vosges quality of service over the years? I remember when they first opened and the service was excellent. These days, you cannot even get them to pick up the phone if you want to place an order or ask a question. And when you go to the store, it is like they do not care if you give them your business or not. I stopped going to Vosges after being a loyal customer for 3 years. I now go to Coco Rouge, their service and chocolate are awesome. Katrina needs to revamp her employees' customer service.

a more realistic debate is to realize that frango is "good value" for what they are. of course they are not in the same league as coco rouge or vosges, but they probably are the best compared to other mints and chocolates of their same cl*** - i.e. fanny may, russell's, etc. coco and vosges are "boutique" chocolates and charge as such, but at $7 bucks a bar or $3.50 per truffle, one would be filing for bankruptcy soon if they had a "chocolate a day" habit. i personally eat about 2 bars a month cuz i love what they have - and they don't use stabilizers or artificial ingredients - this justifies the cost. BUT, if i want a good mint and i'm having a craving for mint chocolates and i know i'm going to eat a lot in one sitting, frango will more than satisfy that urge!! - AND I WON'T BE FILING FOR BANKRUPTCY AFTERWARD.
