The fire's out

Fahrenheit, one of the most anticipated suburban restaurant openings of last year, closed its doors this past weekend. This morning, we talked with chef Pete Balodimas, who opened the restaurant with his parents after leaving his gig as chef de cuisine at Spiaggia. He gave us a canned line about being "ahead of our time in the suburbs," but really, it comes down to a matter of not having enough bums in seats. “Overall, we weren’t doing the numbers we expected to be doing,” he said.

The pork belly with Granny Smith-apple slaw and cheddar beignets (pictured) that we had there back in November still—yes, still—comes up in conversations with friends about the best meal we’ve had in the ’burbs. But admittedly, we also haven’t been back since—and not for a lack of want, either. Like most gourmet destinations, the super-high-quality ingredients Balodimas prided himself on (and the price tag that came with it) put Fahrenheit in the special-occasion category for most locals, save for wealthy Fox-Valley foodies with money to burn.

The only complaint we had back when Fahrenheit opened was the location. With a Main Street St. Charles address, we expected a quaint storefront in the city’s pretty downtown district, but instead found it in a strip mall (albeit a shiny new one) further east. We couldn’t help but think that after shelling out $200 for a five-course dinner for two, you might rather stroll along the Fox River than walk out into a parking lot with a view of the KFC across the street. Thoughts from the chef? “No, we think our location’s perfect,” he says.

No rest for the weary, though—Balodimas is already started the hunt for exec chef positions. “I put my resume out there yesterday. I’m just keeping my ear open.”

I was only there twice for lunch and my meals were wonderful. I had the best rice pudding of my life and I really love rice pudding. but I must agree the location was not that great, and I live in St. Charles!! I think he should reconsider the new downtown that St. Charles is currently developing along the Fox River.

Very sad Day indeed

I am very very sad. Was planning to go there tonight!! Chef personally prepared special vegan dishes for me during prior visits. They were absolutely outstanding and simply the BEST vegan food I have experienced. Again, I am very sad. Won't be eating that well, again...

Went once in March and it was fabulous. Very sad. I live in St Charles and it was a horrible location. Plus the locals have been avoiding that intersection for years because of construction. Even though the construction is done, I'm sure some are still avoiding it. And the comment about being ahead of the time in the suburbs is bull . We supported 302 West for 15-20 years before the chef-owner unexpectedly died. If Farenheit could have stayed open long enough it, too, would have found plenty of local support.

Working with such p***ionate talented people at fahrenheit was a blessing. We all put so much pride in to our work reached so many goals. It Is a shame that the economy is the way it is right now . Good luck to all my fahrenheit family.

I never got to try the resturant but have a gift certificate. Will I be able to use it anywhere else?

I am with Ann. I live in Geneva and we are more than ready for resturants like this. I think it was just an excuse. 302 West was open for 15+years and we went there for more than special occ. In fact you had to make reservations in advance almost every weekend night.

Hate to say this but...this place was too sophisticated for St Charles. It would be open right now if it were in Chicago and doing well in that upper mid market of restaurants like Blackbird, MK, Naha, Spring etc

I really loved the food at Fahrenheit and my partner and I were planning on going there again soon. The food was incredible and well worth the $$$. I completely agree that the location was a total downer and I, like others, feel it would have been much more successful if located in downtown St. Charles. The 'diamond in the rough' location in the strip mall was an unfortunate mistake.

I have gift certificates as well. Do they have any value anywhere, or do i start giving them out as "gifts" to people I don't like?

We dined there once. Very nice place, spouse loved all of his meal. Very few vegetarian options. After lenghty tableside meetings w/the chef about my vegetarian options (that got very tiring - way too much talking!), I still didn't get what I wanted. After all the talk and time money spent I should have. We never went back, but would have if we thought the chef was listening and I could get a great vegetarian meal.
